See Rock City Barn Wall
Object/Artifact
This is one side of a barn that was on U.S. 31E in Spencer County, KY which is east of Louisville. When the barn was slated for demolition, the Museum was able to preserve the signage/lettering painted upon its side: See Beautiful Rock City atop Lookout Mountain.
"See Rock City" is a common sight on barns throughout the south, directing people toward Chattanooga, TN, and the visitor attraction in nearby Georgia. It's estimated that more than 900 barns were painted with these advertisements between the 1930s and the 1960s.
The barn was built by Oscar "Dick" Stump and his father, name unknown at this time. The land that once housed the barn still operates today as a farm by Oscar's son, Charles "Tootie" Stump.
hails from Spencer County, KY, east of Louisville.
