Penn Fuel Gas-Lit Sign
Object/Artifact
A natural gas-powered sign that operated much like a gas street lamp. Each burner had a mantel like a Coleman lantern and a chimney globe to diffuse the light. Gas-lit signs were the only type of illuminated signs other than candle-lit signs prior to the late 1890s when the electric lightbulb was introduced.
This sign is from the 1930s and is presumed to have been a promotion for the local gas company it identified. One of its front faces has been removed so that the internal workings can be viewed.
