Pledge of Allegiance Gilded Glass Sign
Object/Artifact
The display piece was rescued from the former offices of Local 830 by Bob Behounek, Lockport, IL, a well-known Chicago-area signpainter in his own right. He loaned the sign to Wes Lloyd, former business agent for the union, until his passing. Behounek then donated the sign to the museum in 2010 with the encouragement of the Lloyd family.
The Pledge of Allegiance glass piece originally hung in Chicago’s Local 830 Union Hall, and is signed by its creator, Bob Seelander--one of Beverly’s best known signpainters. You will note that the phrase, “under God,” is missing. This was added in the mid-1950s during the McCarthy Era when the nation was influenced by the “Red Scare” threat of Communism.
