Satellite Shopland Sputnik Sign
Object/Artifact
The Satellite Shopland sign hails from a shopping center of the same name in Anaheim, CA, on Katella Avenue; its name drawn from the space craze that ensued after Sputnik was launched in 1957. The owner sought to play off the satellite theme and had sketched out a rough design for the sign and shopped it around to local sign companies for the best price, but no one took him seriously. Undeterred, he decided to build the sign himself. This DIY marvel sat atop a pole overlooking the shopping center for more than 30 years. It was removed in 1999 because of both a new sign ordinance as well as the widening of nearby I-5 interstate
