Gust Mitchell Neon Sign
Object/Artifact
Gust Mitchell was the owner of a neon sign shop in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, in the late 1940s to the mid-1950s. He had emigrated to the United States in 1921 at the age of 18. Mitchell passed away young in 1956 and his shop was purchased by another sign maker; it was renamed "Flasher Neon."
It was common for one sign shop to be purchased with all that it contains, such as: unpurchased signs, sign-making equipment, catalogues, etc. So, when Flasher Neon went out of business in the late 1990s, many former Gust Mitchell items were discovered as the business was sold off in parts in to area antique dealers. This is how several of the Gust Mitchell shop signs made their way to the collection of the American Sign Museum.
