After 33 years a 100-foot neon sign welcoming guests into the former Montclair Plaza shopping center has been dismantled. The sign first went up in 1986 and featured "Montclair Plaza” lettering spelled out against an "M" in teal, pink and blue above a red swoosh. For many residents the removal of the sign marks the end of an era, although for some the sign was an eyesore. Workers equipped with a crane removed the aluminum sections, tossing them to the concrete below which shattered glass and bent material. The shopping center itself underwent a name change in 2015 becoming Montclair Place under new ownership. A modern two-sided LED billboard will take the place of original sign.
