A 50-year old Arby's hat in Ventura was removed reportedly without a demolition permit. Chris Wells, owner of Chis Wells Construction, had been tasked with moving the vintage sign to the Valley Relics Museum in Lake Balboa where it would be preserved. While awaiting a signature on the contract Wells discovered that another crew, Viking Sign Installations, had begun removing the sign with a hydraulic lift. The workers claimed that Arby's had hired their company to remove the sign in pieces and transport it to the dump; the workers were unwilling to identify the location of the dump. The unsanctioned demolition resulted in extensive damage to sign and metal cabinet, making any plans for future preservation a fantasy.
