The Sonrise Donut sign that welcomed visitors along one of Springfield’s original stretches of Route 66 for nearly seven decades has been sold at auction. The business itself has been closed for twenty years, but the sign has remained as a landmark. Until now. Two days before the end of the auction, the double-sided sign appeared to be headed for Fresno and Chicago. However, at the last minute an anonymous bidder prevailed and secured both sides of the sign. As it turns out, that anonymous bidder was the City of Springfield! The sign will nevertheless have to be removed from the rooftop where it has stood all these years. Plans for its future home have not been announced.
