Object History :

Old Dixie Fried Chicken sign, formerly of Pine Castle, FL. The restaurant was well known for its fried chicken since 1962, but closed its original location on May 31 of 2016. The museum had become aware of the threatened sign while exhibiting at the ISA Sign Expo in Orlando, FL. Two attendees at the show—Jimmy Kunsman and Maris Peacock  of Arapahoe Sign Arts in Denver—were attending the show and happened to eat at the local favorite. Seeing that the business was closing, they asked about the future of the sign and were told that it would probably be scrapped. They then came to the museum’s booth at the show and told us about the endangered sign, giving us the phone number of the manager. Arrangements were made with John Ingram, Interstate Sign & Light in Orlando, to take down the sign and a step-deck trailer contracted to get the sign to Cincinnati.

Due to some legalities, the museum only got the top figural portion as well as the plastic faces reading, “Old Dixie Fried Chicken” and the exposed neon below, but not the cabinets.
